Discovering Your True Identity – (Daughters of Heavenly Father)
WhoDunIt? – This is a kick-off activity. Ahead of time gather one fact about each girl. This should be something they think others won’t know about them. Then, on a sheet of paper, type out all of the facts without revealing the person WhoDunIt. Give each YW a “WhoDunIt?” handout. They will mingle with each other, and ask questions to determine which fact represents which girl. When they find the right girl, they will have her initial her fact. At the end, reveal each fact with the corresponding name.
Next, you will have two stations set up. Split the YW up into 2 groups, and let each group have about 15-20 minutes at each station.
“Personal Shields” – This table is set up with crayons, pencils, markers, etc. and blank shields (on paper). Explain that for hundreds of years families had Family Crests with a Family Coat of Arms. (If you have one, bring for an example.) Explain that the coat of arms, or shield, depicts pictures that represent the heritage and qualities of the family. Give each girl a blank shield and have them divide it into at least 3 sections. Let them fill in the boxes with drawings, symbols or words of things that they feel best represent them. Usually the first box is where they came from, their birth, etc. (You can print blank shield templates for free…just google “blank shield template”.)
“I Am A Child of God Boxes” – Each girl is given a little box (like a trinket box). Scriptures that demonstrate Divine Qualities are printed out onto strips of paper (Matthew 5:9; John 15:12; Galatians 5:22-23; Colossians 3:12-17; 1 John 4:21; Moroni 7:44-48). The girls read the scriptures and ponder them, to see if they can pick out the divine qualities. On the reverse side of the scripture strips, they write their feelings about that scripture, about those divine qualities, and how it relates to them. They keep their word strips in their scripture boxes, so they can reference those at any time. (See Personal Progress, p.21, Divine Nature, Value Experience #6)
Closing Remarks – Have a YW leader sum up the evening with a few words regarding the Identity of these YW. Make reference to the YW open house talks and “The Family: A Proclamation to the World.”
