We took small tables and set them up in a circlular pattern around the cultural hall. Leaders each decorated several tables with any unique centerpieces/decorations. Each table had 2 chairs set up so that a couple (one young man and one young woman) would be sitting face to face. The youth were instructed to sit at the tables, one boy and one girl on each. A leader was in charge of keeping track of a timer. At the signal (the Young Men’s president playing chopsticks on the piano…) the 3 minute date would begin. The boy and girl on the table would then visit for three minutes until the next signal was given, when the youth would rotate. At each table we had prepared conversation jars with basic thought questions, so that if the youth were not comfortable just sitting and talking, they could ask each other questions and learn something new about each other. We also had a bowl of treats at each table, some with peanuts, mints, skittles, etc. We rotated enough times that everybody got to go on a “date” with everybody else. When the activity was completed, we served chips and salsa.
This was a very successful activity, with both boys and girls already asking when we can do it again.
